How can we get Gen Z to truly care about nature? Together with friends and influencers, we rebuilt part of a forest and shared the process online. The project aimed to spark curiosity in young people to explore nature themselves, and the real impact becomes clear when creators revisit the site a year later and see how wildlife has returned.

The problem our Generation isn't seeing
Gen Z is more vocal than any generation before about protecting the environment. On social media, climate activism and environmental awareness are some of the loudest topics, but in everyday life, there is a big gap: Studies show that young people today actually spend less time outdoors and often know less about nature than any generation before them. This disconnect matters: without direct experiences, the passion for nature risks becoming abstract, making it harder to truly understand what is being lost. If Gen Z is going to be the generation that leads on climate and biodiversity, they first need to rediscover their personal connection to the natural world.
The opportunity we must take
To bridge that gap, my friends and I teamed up with some of Switzerland’s biggest creators to create a hands-on rewilding experience. Instead of talking about nature only online, we took influencers out into the wild and got our hands dirty. Together, we planted trees, dug ponds, and rebuilt parts of a damaged forest. Every step of the process was documented and shared on social media, turning physical action into inspiring storytelling. The idea wasn’t just to restore one forest, but to show how creators, who reflect Gen Z’s interests, can bring their communities along on a journey into the real world. By experiencing nature directly, influencers were able to share something authentic with their audiences and shift the way Gen Z sees their role in protecting the planet.
The future we'll give to the generation after us
The project proved that when young people see their role models step into nature, they start looking at the outdoors differently. Followers could watch in real time how an empty forest gained new life through trees, ponds, and space for wildlife. This not only made nature feel more accessible, but also sparked curiosity to get outside and experience it first-hand. The story doesn’t end there: the creators will return a year later to see how the forest has changed, making the impact visible and measurable. By showing how nature can recover when given a chance, Rewilding Gen Z became more than just a campaign, it turned into a living example of how social media can inspire real-world change, and how an entire generation can reconnect with the natural world in a meaningful way.
